The current President is Eugene the Cat. He wants to limit the rights of Dogs because he believes they are favored by humans.

Dexter wants to run for President so there are equal rights for all.

Hey! Its been awhile, almost 16 years. I am now 36 years old. Don't tell anyone but I will be running for President this election. I have been hard at work, fundraising and I have waited so long for this moment.

The first half of the year is when the primary elections take place. During this time Dexter traveled to different states, gave speeches, and debated against other democratic candidates. Dexter made sure to visit lots of states over the course of this process to guarantee his win for the popular vote and gain delegates. Delegates are individuals that represent their state at national party conventions. The amount of delegates that a candidate receives determines if they will be the Presidential candidate for their party in the General Elections.

Now let me explain the process of the primaries. First, people with similar ideas group together to form political parties. Candidates from each party campaign all over the country in order to win delegates. Then party members select a candidate from their party either through closed elections, open elections, or a caucus. Who ever they choose will be the candidate running in the general election. Dexter the Dog is running in the primary and hopes to become the presidential candidate for the democrats. 

If your state holds a closed election for the primaries this means you have to vote for the candidate of the party you are registered under. 

If your state holds an open election for the primaries this means you can vote for which ever candidate, no matter the political party. 

Some states holds caucuses. If this is the case, citizens gather in public forums to openly discuss candidates and then vote.
