There are many different genres of books. Finding good books is important when reading to children. Reading good books can increase students reading skills and overall knowledge.

I have learned that being confident as a mentor is important for being a successful teacher. Confidence is also important for students because it maximized their learning.

is for Diversity

Diversifying instruction is important for catering to a diverse group of students. Finding diverse books for students is important for students whose identify is not usually represented in literature.

is for Explore

Through reading buddies the students were able to explore many different book genres. They explored the plot, theme and characters in each book. Exploration is an important skill when reading books.

is for Fun

When reading books to children it is important to have fun. Reading is an essential life skill that many times feel like a chore. When reading is associated with fun, more students are likely to read more and genuinely enjoy it.

is for Goals

Setting goals for my reading buddies was important because they held students accountable for their actions. When students set their own goals they are going to maximize their learning and growth in the classroom.

is for High-Order Thinking Skills

I learned that even when reading books it is important to ask high-order thinking questions for students. This is important because it helps students learn how to think critically about all aspects of a book.

is for Individualization


In education, it is important to individualize instruction for all students. Each student has different needs therefore needs and abilities. Teachers can individualize through books. Finding books that are interesting for students and providing them with what they need is crucial for their learning.
is for Joy


Finding joy in reading is a gift. Students find joy in many things, but sometimes reading isn't one of them. As teachers, we need to help students to find joy in reading and learning.
is for Knowledge

Reading is a skill that is essential for life, but more importantly it is proven to increase overall knowledge. Encouraging students to read will lead to better student learning and achievement.

is for Learning


Children are constantly learning new things. Reading is important for students to incorporate into their daily lives because it helps them learn. Learning never stops, it is a continuous journey.
is for Multicultural

When finding books to read to children it is important to consider multicultural books. Multicultural books are beneficial in understanding one's own culture or learning about someone else's.

is for Non fiction

Non-fiction books are very useful when teaching students. Non-fiction books provide children with true facts unlike fiction books. Non-fiction is used most of the time for teaching students.

is for Opportunity

Providing students with opportunities to read in the classroom will create a positive reading environment for students. An opportunity to read is better than none at all.

is for Prior Knowledge

When reading books to children it is important to understand that prior knowledge may be necessary to understand the book. If students don't have the prior knowledge it may be difficult for them to understand the concept.
