Chapter 2 (Hattie, 2012)
Hattie (2012) collected data from 900+ meta-analyses to support the idea of Visible Learning. There is evidence to support all of his ideas.
"Visible teaching and learning occurs when learning is the explicit and transparent goal" (Hattie, 2012, p. 14)
Chapter 2 Summary
- There is adequate data to support Hattie's findings and ideas behind Visible Learning.
- The role of the teacher is the essential element to make Visible Learning successful.
- The text will provide many ideas and insights to teaching but they are merely suggestions to improve teaching but not all are perfect for each teacher or classroom.
- The goal of Hattie's text is to help teachers more towards an excellence in education.
Chapter 3 (Hattie, 2012)
Expert teachers can:
1. Identify the most important ways to represent the subject they teach
a. It is not about the subject knowledge but how they see the surface and deeper understandings need to know (past, current, and future things to learn in that subject).
2. Are proficient at creating an optimal classroom for climate teaching
a. Building trust, welcome atmosphere of errors/mistakes, and an environment where everyone is respectful of each other
Expert teachers can:
3. Monitor learning and provide feedback
a. Lessons do not go as planned, skilled teachers adapt the lesson and student abilities to provide feedback to move students towards the success criteria.
4. Believe that all students can reach the success criteria
a. Learning is changeable, it is not fixed
b. Treat all students with the respect and interactions that show you believe they can be successful in your class.
5. Influence surface and deep student outcomes
a. Have positive influences on student outcomes - invest in their learning in and out of the classroom.
Other Summary Notes:
- Expert teacher does not mean that the teacher has a lot of experience
- Student learning and deeper understanding shows a sign of the impact of an expert teacher
- When a teacher is passionate about learning and their subject material this leads to students being inspired to learn
Teachers are the major players in the education process. Not all of Hattie's data supports that teachers are the sole reason for making a difference (Hattie, 2012).
