Problems and abuses with the Railroads
As the Railroads had barely any competition, It was easily used to abuse others and along with its function. Farmers had to pay extremely high prices in order to transport grain resulting in the decrease of prices with crops. Railroads had made secret agreements with middlemen, grain brokers and merchants in order to allow railroads to be in control of the storage prices of grain. Farmers began to find themselves in debt constantly despite constant desperate attempts. Some had to mortgage their farms or crops to buy seeds and supplies. Evens suppliers would heighten their prices, resulting in the Farmer to always be in debt and never seeming to stray away from it.
