Lifestyle and customs of tribal groups on the plains

No individual dominated the tribes. The leaders of a tribe ruled by counsel rather than by force. Young men trained to become hunters and warriors. The women helped butcher the animals and prepare the hides, planted crops, and harvested. Their main food source was the buffalo, making them sacred and highly important to the tribes.
Battle/Massacre at Wounded Knee

The Lakota had endured a generation of broken treaties with American settlers. They were in constant conflict over control of the great plains. The ghost dance then appeared because they believed it would restore land, bring back the buffalo, and make the white settlers disappear. Its popularity alarmed the military leaders and the local reservation agent, who decided to arrest the chief of the Lakota. Which then resulted in a free for all.
Sitting Bull

Sitting Bull joined his first war party at 14 years old. He later led an attack on fort rice resulting in him becoming chief of the Lakota nation. In 1868, the Sioux accepted peace with the U.S. government but when gold was discovered in the black hills a rush of white prospectors invaded Sioux lands. Sitting Bull responded but could only win battles, not the war. He was arrested and killed in 1890.
