Tribal groups in the Great Plains lived throughout the west-central portion of the United States. They lived in hide teepes scattered around, creating village, living off the hunt of buffalo and using them to create anything they needed. They made houses, clothing, tools, and more with the buffalo. Later they adapted to the introduction of horses and using trade.

A fter the United States discovered gold in the Northern Plains, U.S. settlers would break treaties that protected reservations. For a generation, the Lakota tribe had endured broken treaties. Native Americans would do the "Ghost Dance" which was supposed to summon a cataclysm that would wipe out the United States. Tensions rose at Wounded Knee. After an American soldier decided to take a rifle from a tribesman, a shot rang out, which started the battle. 150 Lakota and 25 Americans died in the fight.

Sitting Bull was a powerful Native American figure during the New Industrial Age. At 14 years old, he joined his first war party. As a kid, he was seen as weak and called "slow" for his lack of skills. Sitting Bull gained his respect after leading an attack on Fort Rice and became the Chief of the Lakota Nation.

The lifestyles of American settlers, cowboys, and vaqueros in the West were similar. Cowboys followed the ways of vaqueros adapting to their ways of life. The clothing, jobs, and language were influenced by vaqueros. American settlers often farmed for their money. They all faced isolation in the West and endured harsh working and living conditions.

During the new industrial age, railroads were a main part of the economic growth. The transportation of goods and people across the United States benefited consumers and connected people. But the railroads had problems, during this time the farmers had to pay inflated shipping prices and storage prices on trains.
