Three amendments were made to help slaves: the 13th, 14th, and 15th. The 13th Amendment freed slaves, the 14th Amendment gave anyone born in America citizenship, and the 15th Amendment allowed everyone in America to vote.

is for black codes

Black codes were made since the Southerners thought that free slaves should not be treated fairly. They made colored people use specific bathrooms and stay away from places at certain times.

is for Carpetbaggers

Carpetbaggers were people who came from the North to the South after the war to help a group of people who provided for freed slaves. The South didn't like them being there and hurt them whenever they were seen.

is for Disenfranchisement

Disenfranchisement is when you can't vote for a representative . Many people were disenfranchised because they were not seen as "equal."

is for economic problems

The South had a lot of economic problems during Reconstruction since Andrew Johnson did not want to help them since they were the reason that the Civil War happened

The Freedman's Bureau is a group that helped freed slaves find a job and a house so that they could get  their families food and clothes.

The Grandfather clause was a law that said that you could not vote for a represenative unless you could show proof that your grandfather voted.

Hiram Revels was the first African American to be a Senator. He became senator on Feburary 25th, 1870.

is for Illiteracy

Many freedmen could not read, so they were illiterate. They couldn't read because slaves were not taught how to read or write, since it wasn't needed to work in a field or do housework.

is for Jim crow laws

As a result of slaves earning freedom, southerners made laws that limited freedmen to using specific items and going to specific places that are not as good as the other places.

is for Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan is a group of mean people who wanted to hurt freedmen and anyone who helped the freedmen. They would threaten them and hurt them at any time, anywhere.

is for Lynching

Lynching is when someone was punished publically for a crime without a trial. Most of the time, it's by hanging. This happened to freedmen a lot, since nobody would stop them from being punished.

is for Mississippi plan

The Mississippi plan of 1876 was made by Democrats to gain control and overpower republicans. They used fraud and intimidation to win, and it worked.

is for the N word

The N word was a very hateful word that southern people called African Americans to ridicule them.

is for Oath of Allegiance

In the beginning of reconstruction, Abraham Lincoln wanted 10% of voters to pledge to America in order to be forgiven for the war. This was called the 10% plan.

is for Poll Tax

Poll taxes were taxes put on voters to limit who could vote. This was mainly to stop African Americans from voting.
