This is Finn the Math Fish. Finn
loves to swim in the deep blue
sea. Sometimes, he even comes
across math problems! Whenever
he finds a math problem, he
always tries to solve it.

2+2=?
5+3=?

One day, Finn was swimming along when
he found some addition problems. He
loved addition! It didn't take him long
to solve these problems. All he had to
do was put the numbers together and he
got his "sum", or the answer to the
problem.

2+2=4
5+3=8

So, that's what Finn did. He put the
numbers together to get an even
bigger number, which is the answer to
his problem.

8-5=?
4-3=?
6-6=?

After Finn solved the addition problems,
he swam through the deep blue sea some
more. Then, Finn came across some
subtraction problems! He knew what to
do with these problems as well, because
subtraction is the opposite of addition.
Instead of getting a bigger number, you
count down and get a smaller number.

8-5=3
4-3=1
6-6=0

So, Finn took the second number and counted
down from the first number to get the
"difference" between the two numbers,
which was his answer. With 8-5, Finn counted
down 5 numbers from 8. "7, 6, 5, 4... 3!," he
shouted as he got his "difference" between
the two numbers, which was his answer.
After Finn solved all the problems, he swam
away happily.

3x2=?2x4=?
1x5=??

Finn was swimming along again when he
found a rocky island with multiplication
problems! Uh oh, Finn didn't know how to
do multiplication very well. He needed
his friend Reef to help him out. "Oh,
Reef!," he called, "Can you help me with
these problems?"

3x2=?2x4=?
1x5=?

"Of course!," Reef said excitedly as he swam
over to Finn. He explained to Finn that when
you multiply numbers, you add the first
number by itself as many times as the second
number shows. So, 3 times 2 would be 3 plus
3 and 2x4 would be 2+2+2+2. The answer to
a multiplication problem is called the
"product".
"So, what would 1x5 equal?," Reef asked Finn.

3x2=62x4=8
1x5=5

"Let's see...," Finn thought. "1x5 is the same
thing as 1+1+1+1+1... 1+1 equals 2, 2+1 equals 3,
3+1 equals 4, and 4+1 equals 5! So, the answer's
5!"
"That's right!" said Reef, cheerfully. "An
easier way to do these kinds of problem is if
any number is multiplied by 1, then that
number equals itself." Finn thanked his friend
and they swam together, further exploring the
deep blue sea.

4÷2=?6÷2=?
8÷4=?

As Finn was getting towards the end of
his journey with Reef, they stumbled
upon an old sunken ship with division
problems near the bow, or the front. "I
don't know how to do division, either,"
said Finn, confused.
"It's okay! Division can get really tricky.
I'll explain this, too!" said Reef.
