There once was a young king and queen who
longed for children. They would cry
themselves to sleep thinking about not having
a child to tuck in. One day, when the queen
was walking along a pond, she spotted a fish
out of water. having compassion, she gently
picked it up, and dropped it in the water.
Then the fish said: "Since you have such a
kind heart, you will have a baby soon
enough." As the fish said, the queen had a
baby girl who she named Aurora.

To celebrate the birth of their daughter, they
held a party, and invited the whole kingdom,
and the eight fairies. They had the fairies eat
on silver plates, but when they ran out of
silver, and were ashamed on giving the eighth
fairy a bronze plate. So they turned the fairy
away. After everyone had eaten, the fairies
blessed Aurora with gifts. The first beauty,
second musical, third dancer, fourth peaceful,
fifth graceful, sixth lover of animals, and right
before the seventh, the eighth fairy
appeared!

She was very angry on being turned away. "I have a gift
for the child," she told them. "On her sixteenth birthday,
she shall prick her finger on a spinning wheel, and at the
first drop of blood, she shall die!" With that she
disappeared. Aurora's parents were terrified! Clutching
Aurora close, the queen said, "What can we do?" Lila, the
seventh fairy, also the youngest, timidly stepped forward
and said: "Your Majesty, I have not given my gift yet."
"Then you can undo the curse?" The king said hopefully.
"No, I'm to young for that! But, I can fix it up a bit!"
Rolling up her sleeves, she said, "True, True she will prick
her finger, but instead, sleep for a hundred years, then
be awakened by true love's kiss."

Aurora grew up inside the castle. Spinning
wheels had been illegal since she was a few days
old. And just in case, everything sharp had been
removed for the castle. Aurora was now fifteen.
All the gifts she had been given had come true,
and she was now a young lady of beauty and
grace. One day, on Aurora's sixteenth birthday,
she decided to explore the castle. She found her
way to small tower, where she found an old maid
spinning yarn on a spinning wheel.

She had been there for years, and had not yet
heard the law. Aurora was curious. She crept close
to the wheel, for had never seen a spinning wheel.
The maid asked if she would like to try. Aurora
started spinning it when her finger brushed against
the needle. Some blood started to appear. The
queen appeared in the doorway screaming, and
tried to stop the blood with her dress. But she was
to late. A small drop of blood fell on the floor dress.
Aurora fell to the ground. Aurora saw the eighth
fairy, in corner, cackling, and pointing to the hour
glass. Then all was dark.

The queen sobbed helplessly. The king rushed to
her side. Servants poured ice water on the
princess, but it was no hope. Finally, they lay her
on a soft, beautiful bed, in hope of her to awake.
When Lila came to check on Aurora, she realized
when the girl awoke, the castle would be full of
complete strangers! She quickly said a spell, and
everyone else fell asleep. The kitchen girls fell
asleep making bread, the shepherds fell asleep
petting sheep, and most of all the king and queen
slept on their thrones. So when Aurora awoke,
everything would be just as before.
