To the macaws at the zoo that inspired this book, Leroy and Harley

Once upon a time, there was a magical forest full of light, happiness, and most of all, color. There were birds and flowers of every color imaginable. They were kept colorful by a one-of-a-kind parrot, who sang beautiful songs and who's feathers were every color of the rainbow. Her name was Iris. With her magic, the birds in the forest were happy and safe.

Each day, Iris would shake her tail and take to the sky, riding on a cloud. Where she flew, she would sing, and bits of magic would follow her This was how she kept the forest happy and colorful day after day.

There was only one bird who didn't like Iris's magic, a gray cormorant named Evie. She had left the forest when Iris had arrived. She was gray while the other birds were colorful, so she was forbidden to enter. Over time she grew angrier until finally she thought, "If I can't have bright colors, than no one can!"

Little did anyone know, she had a little bit of her own magic up her wing. One day, as Iris flew across the sky, Evie summoned a storm cloud and struck Iris with a lightning bolt! The bolt transported her to a cave far beyond the forest.

The forest transformed into a dull, barren wasteland. Even without her magic, the birds maintained their color, but they knew it wasn't for long. If the one remaining rose died, their color would quickly be drained as well.

One day, one bird, a blue and gold macaw named Levi, discovered what had happened to Iris. When he found out, he decided to rescue her. He was concerned about his fellow birds, but also because he was secretly in love with Iris.

Meanwhile, Evie had chained Iris to a rock so she couldn't escape, then went out to fish for her dinner. Even though she was chained to a rock, Iris was hopeful she would be rescued. So she sang. The song calmed her down and made the cave bloom with flowers.

For days and nights Levi flew far and wide searching for Iris. Finally, he heard singing that he recognized as Iris's because of the trail of flowers that was coming from the same direction. He decided to follow the flower trail and the singing and hope that it would lead him to Iris.
