is for Armistice
An armistice is an agreement made by different sides in a war to stop fighting. In November 1918 the two sides agreed to temporarily stop fighting. This was really the end of the war.


is for Battle of Blanc Mont Ridge
In October of 1918, American troops fought against the German army. This battle took place in Champagne, France. It ended with the Germans leaving, and a win for the Americans.


is for Conscription
In 1917 the US government signed the Selective Service Act, which allowed them to conscript a national army. Conscription is forcing someone to fight in a war. This was only necessary when there weren't enough volunteers to fight.


is for Dog
The US did not use many dogs for fighting. However, one of the most decorated dogs in military history was American. Sergeant Stubby was a stray who was adopted by the 106th infantry, and the only dog to ever be promoted to sergeant through combat. He was assigned to the 26th division in WWI


is for Entangled Alliances
Just before World War I, the Great Powers of Europe split into two main teams. The Triple Alliance was made up of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Italy. The Triple Entente was made up of Britain, France, and Russia.


is for Finishing The War
World War I officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. It was a victory for the allies, and a major loss on the hands of Germany. The end of this war brought punishment on Germany, ruining their economy.


is for Gas Attacks
World War I is known as the chemists war. This is because this was the first war to use gasses in chemical warfare. They would throw gasses in the trenches to force people out or kill them.


is for Hitler
Hitler volunteered and fought for Germany in WW1. His time fighting gained him military experience and training that would help him take control of Germany and lead to WWII. He was elected because Germany was desperate after their economy was ruined.


is for Imperialism
Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries. By 1900 the British Empire extended over five continents and France had control of large areas of Africa. Germany had a late start to the scramble, and thus was in competition.


is for John J. Pershing
General John Pershing was a senior United States Army officer. His most famous post was when he served as the commander of the American Armies on the Western Front. He was also nicknamed "Black Jack".


is for Killing of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand is shot to death along with his wife by a Serbian nationalist in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He was heir to the Austo-Hungarian Empire. This sparked the beginning of WWI.


is for League of Nations
As a result of WWI, the League of Nations was proposed. It was an international organization created after the First World War to provide a group to calm international disputes. It's main purpose was to uphold the Treaty of Versaille.


is for Militarism
Militarism is the belief that a country should maintain a strong military. Many countries were building stronger militaries of their own. This made other countries anxious, and on edge.


is for Nationalism
Nationalism is loyalty to the interests of a particular country. It was this pan-Slavic nationalism that inspired the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Thus starting the war.


is for Oliver Wendell Holmes
Holmes was the Supreme Court justice who agreed that free speech could be limited in wartime. This decision was made to keep people from speaking against the war effort. It was also claimed to be for the protection of the public.


is for Propaganda
Propaganda is the spreading of information in support of a cause. WWI was the first war where mass media played a key role in keeping people at home informed. It was also the first war where the government used propaganda to alter the public's opinion.
