The country France, originally known as "The Lank of The Franks" named after the Empire of the time, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. France is the same size as Texas, yet holds more than 3x the people. This small country is home to the beautiful city of Paris, as it is also their capital.
Country Name & Capital
Similarly to the United States, the French measure success by education level, family reputation, and financial status. With a population of 67 million, typically the average French family has two kids and plentiful of pets. Unlike the United States, France is a formal and timeless country, they take manners and proper etiquette seriously as it is a way to present yourself. In fact, it's considered to be improper and disrespectful to publicly use combs, toothpicks, or any type of grooming.
Culture
The iconic and recognizable language of French is not only spoken in France, but it's also the official language of 28 different countries. At the age of six, students in school begin taking a language course, then at the age of 12 they begin learning a second language. As for common greetings, the commonly known french-cheek-kiss is only done with close friends or relatives. If you attempt to kiss the cheeks of someone you just met, you may come across odd or alluring.
Language
France is well known for their history with religion; however, the government officials swear on the French Constitution rather than the Bible like the United States do. Approximately half of the French population claim to not belong in a religion or are atheists. Christianity (Roman Catholics) and Islam are the two main religions practiced in France; however, there are many other religions practiced. Religious gatherings are also a social gathering and typically last two hours.
Religion
France holds one of the largest industrial and welfare economic industries in the world. Some of their largest productions include motor vehicles, aircraft, chemicals, and food processing. Furthermore, France is best known for their production of wine, dairy products, bread, and more recently skin care. Even though France has a successful business production, they have not been able to fully bounce back since the 2008 world recession, alike many neighboring countries.
Economy
The country and culture of France is full of history. The French culture began in 51 BC when the Celtic people conquered the Romans and adopted their culture. The country was then controlled by The Franks Empire until 888, to this day there is not an abundant amount of data or records from the year 888 to roughly the 1500s. In the later 1500s, as Protestantism began to spread throughout Europe, the Roman Catholics fought against them and it led to a war which lasted from 1562 to 1598. That is 36 years!! This era is known as the Reformation. Even when the war ended, differences in religious views still made an impact on politics and values.
History
During the 1600s France played a leading role in Europe for trading overseas such as Asia, Africa, and select islands. They were on the track of becoming a more centralized government and gaining more power. However, in the mid to late 1700s the monarchy began to collapse, with the ongoing conflict with Europe, France lost many territories to them. This led to the French Revolution, which opened doors to the idea of democracy. The people of France overruled King Louis XVI's (16th) monarchy. The era that followed was known as the Reign of Terror. Napoleon Bonaparte dictated himself as the ruler of France in 1804 and conquered most of Europe; however, when he entered Russia, Austria and Prussia joined together to seize Paris, which led to the fall of Napoleon.
History Cont.
History Cont.
Napoleon attempted to regain power of France, but ultimately was defeated by English and Prussian-led forces. The monarchy was eventually restored in the 1800s and was ruled by King Louis XVIII (18th). During the 20th century is when France's "Beautiful Ages" began. France was able to expand their colonies to Africa and Asia, making it the second largest empire in the world (British taking first). Shortly after, things took a turn for France. France was the battleground for both world wars and caused the French Empire to collapse. Now, France has a semi-presidential system and is currently governed by Emmanuel Macron.
