What country are we learning about today?

We are learning about Egypt. Egypt is in the Northeastern part of Africa. On two sides of the country, there is land and on the south and west. On the  north and the east part of Egypt there is the Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea.  This is a very hot country with the Nile River splitting down the middle of the country.

The culture in Egypt is very split. A vast majority are muslims, a big majority of sunni muslim. Islamic theory is rooted deeply. They praise God (Allah) through the Qur’an. But 10% of the population is Christian. All churches are built facing the east. Most important day of worship is Sunday where the services can last up to 4 hours.

Arabic is the official language spoken in Egypt. There are many dialects of Arabic that are spoken in Egypt. Egyptian Arabic is the most widely understood worldwide. Egyptians are very proud of their rich language.

The economy has improved over time. Since the 1970s, the government has made the economy more and more open. The Govt. has encouraged foreign investment. These reforms have lowered inflation and improved the conditions for international investment.
