Location and Climate
Morocco is an African nation that sits at the upper-left region of the continent. It covers an area roughly double the size of the UK or California, coming in at 102,703 square miles (266,000 square kilometers). A good portion of its claimed territory is a disputed region known as Western Sahara. Average temperatures in Casablanca (the biggest city) range from 55°F to 73°F depending on the season. The temperature between the coastal and the inland part of the country differs a lot.
Historical Background
Morocco has a long and deep history, ranging back thousands and thousands of years. Over these years, they have had a long history with foreign rule due to being located in a strategic point that connects Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Morocco faced European colonizations during the 20th century from both Spain and France. After gaining independence in 1956, the government became a constitutional monarchy, which is still ongoing. Conflict with Western Saharan forces has been going on Since the 1970s.
The official language is Arabic, and Moroccans speak a certain version of Arabic, known as Derija, which literally translates to "dialect". The use of French can be seen in sectors like business, government, and education. Spanish is seen in northern parts of the country, due to historical reasons. Morocco is an Islamic country, with most of their people being Sunni Muslims. Religions is a huge part of the culture and traditions of modern day Moroccans. A big population of Jews used to exist in Morocco, but most of them have emigrated to Israel and other countries during the past century.
