Dedicated to the pioneers that helped settle our country and the hard ships they went through.

My great grandparents traveled from Iowa to Colorado back in about 1862 because my great grandfather had tuberculosis and the dryer cllimate was better for him. He was a lawyer and he started
a practice in Colorado Springs Colorado. then known as Colorado City.

They started out with several wagons but thought they
could go faster if they left the rest of them and traveled on their own which turned out to be a good thing because sadly the train of wagons was attacked by Indians and all were killed there. They made it to Denver and later to Colorado Springs, where he started his law office and then became the first prosecutting attorney for Colorado city.

They lived in a log cabin where you could see the
Rocky Mountains. Pikes Peak,Cheyenne Mountain and other mountains.

My Grandpa was born there and then his sister was born the next year or so. My Grandpas dad died when he was very young. His Mother my great Grandma had to make a living so she worked doing laundry for people . It was very hard work because there was no electricity or washing machines at that time. They did it in a log cabin and hung the clolthes out on a line to dry and then iron the clothes with a iron that they set on a
wood stove to heat up the iron. They also had a garden and grew vegetables and flowers. My grandpa liked to fish so they probably had fish to eat too.

In the winter time the women made clothing and knitted mittens and scarves and gloves to wear. At Christmas time they all made home made gifts to give each other for Christmas. They had to milk the cow so they could have milk and sell some to their neighbors.
They would save the cream from the cow and churn their own butter. They burned wood in the fire place for heat.

In the evenings mother would fix hot cocoa and cookies . And then she would read from the Bible.
And sometimes other stories too. She taught them to read and write and do arithmetic . When the weather was better they walked to the little one room school house.
